The Interdisciplinary Breast Centre of the Technical University of Munich was founded in May 2006 by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology together with the Departments of Radiology and Breast Imaging, Hemato-/Oncology, Pathology, Nuclear Medicine, Psycho-Oncology, Plastic Surgery, and Radiotherapy. IBZ was certified according to the German Senology and Cancer Societies (DKG/DGS) and ISO 9000:2001 in May 2006 and obtained its EUSOMA accreditation in June 2007. Daily breast clinics ensure rapid diagnosis and further treatment planning. All patient information as well as tumor board consensus statements are entered into a database and are available for online analysis. Benchmarking is performed by the German Oncology Centre in Düsseldorf together with 237 certified German breast centres. Moreover, our data is also entered into the Munich Cancer Registry. The initial certification as well as yearly audits have rendered the clinical processes at IBZ more transparent and lead to improvements. In addition to medical excellence and clinical research, IBZ places a strong emphasis on patient care with two breast nurses and counselling by a breast cancer survivor.
