The Breast Surgery Unit was established in 2001, but only since november 2009 it has had its own autonomy (beds and staff). The unit is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of all breast diseases. The 'Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza' Hospital, an Institution of Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, was opened on 5 May 1956. The Holy See inherited the Hospital in 1968. In accordance with its Founder's thought, the institutional purposes of the Foundation are didactics, medical training and scientific research, as well as care of and assistance for those who suffer.
