The Breast Unit of Alexandra Hospital, founded in 1979, operates within the 1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Athens University Medical School and is EBCOG and ESGO accredited. It has 12 beds, exclusively for breast cancer patients. About 180 new breast cancer cases are operated on every year. The outpatient office is visited by more than 4000 breast patients annually for post-op follow-up, breast cancer follow-up, breast screening program, high-risk population monitoring program and breast emergencies.
The Unit's main objects are a) education of medical students, b) training of resident gynaecologists during their specialty in breast diseases and surgery, c) conducting and participating in clinical studies.
The Breast Unit cooperates with the following Units: Athens University Oncology Clinic, Radiotherapy Unit, Nuclear Medicine Unit, Radiology Unit, Pathology Unit, Cytology Unit, Athens University Psychiatrical Clinic and hospital psychologists.
Currently, we collaborate with NIH (National Institutes of Health, USA) and Toronto University (familial breast cancer and genetic analysis, impact of breast surgery on marital status).
