The Surgical Breast Unit of Vienna Medical University is an interdisciplinary unit including Medical Oncology, Surgery, Radiotherapy, Pathology, Plastic Surgery and Nuclear Medicine.
Patients are referred to the Surgical Outpatient Ward and further treatment options are discussed within the Tumor Board. All standard treament option for breast cancer patients are available including modern surgical techniques such as oncoplastic surgery performed either as lumpectomy and reduction mammaplasty or as two-team approach with subcutaneous mastectomy and immediate reconstruction.
The unit participates in several national and international prospective trials with a close cooperation with the Austrian Breast and Colorectal Study Group (ABCSG) which has already randomized more than 20,000 patients wihtin more than 100 centers in Austria. To date we have trials for neoadjuvant and ajuvant as well as palliative settings.
After surgery, patients are again discussed within a tumor board. All those who wish to have follow up visits are encouraged to do so. Our follow up program includes bi-annual CT scans of the thorax and the abdomen as well as tumor marker CEA and CA 15-3.
